WHy not? Need a better QB than we have. None worth drafting atm. And I read the articule on signing him for a first and second. yeah it may be 2 1st but trading for him would be the option
Opinions on what the Pats could command for Cassel have varied. Longtime NFL exec Michael Lombardi, writing for the National Football Post, on Thursday called Cassel the top quarterback available and said acquiring him could cost a first-round pick among the top 15 as well as a second-rounder. NFL Network analyst Steve Mariucci says it will take a first-rounder plus to get the signal-caller.
That’s in addition to agreeing to a long-term contract with the player.
It’s a steep price, but Cassel is proven. He won 11 games and has learned from arguably the greatest quarterback of his generation in Brady. A general manager of a quarterback-starved team – say, the Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers or Chicago Bears – may rather do what it takes to get Cassel instead of taking a big financial gamble on a college player who may or may not pan out.
The 49ers need look no further than their own locker room. In 2005, they made Alex Smith the number one overall pick, signing him to a six year deal that included $24 million in guaranteed money. Four seasons later, Smith has played in just 32 games, with 19 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He did not take a snap for

Hill is best we got at this time but he reall hasn't learned on making the dumb turnovers. He makes some good playand doesn't make alot of mistakes but when he makes that mistake its a hugh costly mistake not a little one.

Why? Thread starter did nothing wrong he hasn't broken the COC's He made a thread which states his thoughts and opinions. Just because some people do not like it doesn't mean it should be deleted. Does this mean I should delete all your threads you start because I do not like the idea or other members on the MB do not like your idea.
The whole point of this message board to post ones thoughts, opinions and talk about the one thing we all love the 49ers. Not to ridicule new members because one doesn't like what he has to say. Instead of saying delete the thread maybe give your opinion on why Cassel wouldn't be a good fit with the 49ers and make it a good discussion.. :friends:

I say that it would be a complete wase to get cassel. giving up 2 first rounders and 14 million a year would destroy the future and the salary cap. Shaun Hill is fine for now and Alex still has a glint of hope. There are much more important things than replacing an average quarterback with an average quarterback that was on an elite team.

So let me get this straight...we're NOT interested in Cassel? A QB that has all the physical attributes of Alex but actually knows how to use them. Or do we just hate him because of what it takes to get him?

The problem is that just because he was good with the Pats, it doesn't mean he will be good for us. It's much easier to be a decent QB when you have a nice line, Randy Moss, and a great coaching staff.

I'd probably trade a third rounder at the highest.

Actually he threw more to Wes Welker. Cassel did well throwing short to intermediate passes. His deep passes were far from great. Belichick adjusted effectively in calling plays to Cassel's strengths.
All and all, Cassel made very good decisions under center and took his team one win away from a playoff birth. I agree, it helps to play for a team that is superbowl bound.

No, it's not going to end up taking 2 first rounders for him. The Pats will trade him for less, that's just the amount a team gives up if they sign him to an offer sheet that the pats won't match.

But he doesn't have the "exclusive" franchise tag, so the 2 first rounders rule goes out the window. The Pats know what they're doing, they'll likely get a 2, and maybe another 2 or 3 down the road.

Calling Cassel proven is a gross overstatement. In fact, S. Hill has a better winning pct. with a far worse supporting cast. (Cassel won 10 games in 15 starts and Shaun Hill has won 7 games in 10 starts.)

well the op mentioned flat out signing him which we would mean 2 first rounders. of course that's not a likely scenario because any team considering him would offer a trade before giving up two first round picks.

no if someone signs him it is two first rounders unless a trade is worked out.
For now, he remains a free agent, but the Patriots can match any offer made by another team or allow him to sign with that team in exchange for two first-round draft picks. The franchise tag value is the average of the top five paid NFL players at a particular position.
If and when Cassel signs the one-year designation, he will be under contract to the Patriots and could be dealt.

some people just think its there way or the highway. they think none else has any rights and if the have an opinion they they should be silenced. People like that should move out of the US. we are free and have a right to have our own opinion.
But regardless. I don't see Hill taking us to the superbowl any time soon. He has made some plays yes. He's not the worst in the league but It's just crazy when he makes a mistake is so hughly disasterous. I made a mistake and thought it was only a 1st and 3rd but didn't realize it was a prediction or what they thought he was worth.
I mean if Cassel was not that good of a QB why would New England be willing to Franchise him and willing to have 25% of there salary cap on 2 players. I mean would the 49ers be willing to Franchise Hill if he was a Free agent. No.

Lets trade for a guy who got sacked the 2nd most in the NFL behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, who had a worst statistical season by average game than Shaun hill despite having the best weapons in the NFL. And to make it a little sweeter to a team we've already given a top 10 pick how about we give them two more top 11 picks. Because we will fail with Cassell at the helm. Great Thread :shoot:
And as far as would we be willing to franchise Shaun Hill if he was a free agent of course we wouldn't. But we wouldn't do that with Matt Cassell either. neither of them are worth 14m. The patriots probably needed to keep him on the roster because of Tom Brady's injury status. You never know whether or not he's going to be healthy or effective for the team because the Patriots never give any injury status to the league.

You have to laugh at the people knocking Cassel. The guy proved that a future HOF'r thats currently playing in his prime (Brady) is replaceable and all people do is find any excuse not to give the man the credit he is due. Seriously get a clue.
Brady is a future HOF'er because of his postseason play. Cassel has done nothing to show he's replaceable.

brady, is in a class only w/ p. manning. but cassel did us pats fans right by the way he played. each week we saw great improvment in his game. look at how many times he was sacked early on and as time went by, his sack total decreased when he started to read defenses and learned to step up in the pocket. he has a bright future wherever he is in the nfl.

Yep, he showed he has what it takes to be a star QB in the NFL. Im sure he will do okay with whatever team he goes to next season if he has an okay line and receivers.
