I saw Peppers' interview at the Pro-bowl--the man wants to play in a 34 D-fense. Now my questions are how much are we willing to pay him and what would it take to bring him here.

alot of money. lots of it. the guy only has 2 seasons without double digit sacks. He'll be one of the highest paid defensive players in the league.

I don't know but at one point, the Panthers offered Peppers the largest contract for a DE of all time and he turned it down.

I would expect him to want 5 yrs 75 million, 6 yrs 90 mill, 7 yrs 105 mill...around 15 mill per year. We could sign him, but wouldn't improve very many other positions of need.

he is a beast, would love to have him in SF. Peppers, Spikes, Willis, Haralson with Lawson rotating in. scary. Sign Bryant McFadden too. Just draft a OT or a DT with the 1st pick, Michael Hamlin in the 2nd, we are on our wayy

If we didnt throw away money on Clements and Smith, we could be front the front runners for Peppers.
seemed like a good idea at the time

I don't care what we spend for him, I say we pay the money but do what we did with Nate Clements deal which was very smart in that it didn't kill us.

your point was that since they got that money the niners arent in contention for peppers. my point is that the niners have plenty of money if they want to go after peppers.
nowhere in the two posts is there any conversation of excusing the men for spending money how they saw fit. dont change the subject.

Actually I didnt say that.
Its one thing to mistake someones words in an actual conversation, where the words have passed, but the text is right there. Read it again and tell me where I said that.

You act like Clements was DeAngelo Hall of the Raiders this past season. He's not that bad. He gambles a lot, and tries to make the play. And with our formations, it doesn't allow him to do that very often.
Smith had a good season if you ask me. Sure, he could have had a few more sacks, but all they are is stats. He was drawing double teams all the time, and got a boatload of QB hurries. I'm not complaining.
We made him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history and he wasnt even a top 10 CB then, and he hasnt even been as good in SF as he was in Buffalo.

Its one thing to criticize someones reading comprehension skills. Its another to criticize their reading comprehension skills after having typed "we could be front the front runners for Peppers".
The point still remains. Your post was about how spending money on Smith and Clements will hinder the Niners opportunity to acquire Peppers, while mine is that the Niners have the cap money if they want to go after him.

Nate Clements is playing fine right now. The whole secondary is suffering from a lack of pass rush.
If Nate was so good, then you would expect the QB to throw it alot more towards the #2 CB. That hasn't been the case. QB's haven't been afraid to throw towards him. Def not worth the money he was paid.
I agree, we definitely overpaid for him, but some people act as if he hasn't earned a dime. I think he's doing a fine job. I know I'm beating a dead horse when I say this, but once we get a decent pass rush, our secondary will improve.
Nate Clements is playing fine right now. The whole secondary is suffering from a lack of pass rush. Defensive backs don't control their entire destiny. Only partially. Exactly why guys like Champ Bailey and Dre Bly have struggled the past two seasons.

wow ur a genius
Smith led NFL Dlinemen in tackles this year and was second on our team in sacks....so I guess he wasn't worth the money, right?
Nate has been solid for us so far. He's one of the best CBs in the NFL. Oh no, he had a bad game against Dallas...get over it! He's had 2 solid years for us, and last time I checked, he did a pretty good job against Fitz both times we played the Cards this year, something a lot of other teams have had trouble doing. Just ask the Steelers.....so I guess he's a bust too.

smith and clements have both played very well and we have plenty of cap room this season. I don't really see your point.

Great point about Justin Smith. He is a beast in run defense. This guy brings i on each and every play. Yes, he didn't get double digit sacks, but he did get around 8 sacks.
I am certain that if we got a better safety to help out and get a pass rush, Nate Clements would be a big time corner. I personally don't think he is that bad. He is a solid corner.
I am actually against signing Peppers because he is a project if we sign him to play our elephant position. At times, the Panthers did use Peppers in space(drop back into coverage) but I just don't think we should offer the biggest defensive contract ever to a project.

Nate was definately atop 10 Corner. At the time, he was one of the most complete corners in the game. He was and still is one of the better cover corners, still is one of the best tackling corners and he has been among the league leaders in forced fumbles over the years. Also, not to mention if he gets his hands on the ball, he is a threat to take it to the house whether it is an INT or punt return.

I'm not a big fan of taken a guy who is great at hitting QBs and saying "hey on this play leave the QB alone"... I know LT was great in coverage and in pass rushing but I'd rather have him breaking Joe Theismann more frequently than dropping in zone like SD often did with Shawne Manyinjuryman...

Great point, but there is more to playing the elephant position than just rushing the QB. I think the best elephant in the NFL is DeMarcus Ware. He does rush the QB often as shown in his sack total, but he is required to drop back into coverage at times also. This will be needed to throw teams off as far as mixing it up so that it isn't easy to make hot reads. Perfect example would be the 101yd INT that James Harrison had in the Super Bowl. He normally blitzes and the natural reaction is to go to the WR running the slant directly to the spot that the OLB leaves vacant by blitzing. Harrison faked the blitz and dropped back into the passing lane...PICK 6.

which is why i'm fine with a limited use of the Lebeau zone blitz. in the end I'm a 4-3 guy that doesn't care if you know which 4 guys are rushing if they consistently get to the QB. Gotta remember i'm a guy who watched players like Reggie White who simply just moved along the line but consistently hit QBs...
