Bengals today released Levi Jones.
Would you rather have Levi Jones in camp instead of Barry Sims competing for a back-up role?

Missed 17 games the past three years........
Depends if you could get him on a contract based on playing time.

Well, a combination of two injury prone players in Marvel Smith and Levi Jones is better than one crappy old Barry Sims.

Just as big of an injury liability as JJ. We already have one risk in Marvel Smith, so I think our best bet is to ramp up Boone and see if he can fill in if Smith goes down.

 Bad move, at least Simms is an average backup, hes just not starter material. Lets not forget Barry Simms > Kwame Harris, we'll be fine till nest years draft, Hopefully the guy from Ohio State pans out.

Depending if they could stay off the IR at the same time...

I like the idea of a Marvel Smith or Levi Jones coming off the bench in the event one or the other gets injured.
Ideally, Marvel starts, then Levi heals up on the bench until needed if Marvel gets injured.
I really, really hope monsterious Alex Boone shows enough to make our roster.
I don't like the idea of freak'en Barry Sims coming off the bench.... he belongs off the team!

Why don't the 49ers sign Paul Wight Jr. AKA "Big Show" and give him a chance to make the squad. At 7 ft and 445 lbs I'm sure he could be a serviceable backup on the O-Line. He couldn't be any worse than Barry Sims.

Broncos Taking An Interest In Levi Jones

Suddenly out of a job today after being cut by the Cincinnati Bengals, offensive tackle Levi Jones’ next NFL employer could be the Denver Broncos if he’s unable to obtain a starting position elsewhere, according to Bill Williamson of ESPN.com.
Although no deal appears to be imminent, the Broncos are reportedly one of the teams interested in Jones.
Here’s the caveat: The Broncos are just interested in Jones as insurance behind standout young tackle Ryan Clady.
Per the report, Jones is expected to explore the Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bills’ respective offensive line situations before he’ll seriously evaluate backup opportunities.
So, a quick signing appears unlikely for Jones, a former first-round draft pick from Arizona State.

Get on the phone Scot.... let'em know he only has Barry Sims to beat out as a back up.
Heck, I think I can beat out Barry Sims!

I think Jones would be a good addition but somebody else will be willing to pay more for him. There is such a shortage of tackles right now that Jones will probably get $2 million a year somewhere when he probably deserves half of that.
Unless the cap space is burning a hole in McLoughan's pocket, I don't see the 49ers replacing one washed up tackle (Sims) with another (Jones).

Cut Barry Sims before he gets the idea he can make the team, he is going to waste reps for someone else. He was so bad in the Miami game they should have benched him and put Vernon Davis at right tackle. Anyone would be better.

Levi jones is still pretty young and if we could bring him in and let him completely heal I would be very happy. If Marvel can start this year and play half the season then Jones could step in and Boone could be on the ps this year and step in next year. I like the Idea.

i don't think bird-leg sims has ever seen a squat rack. my 6-4 270 lb brother could pin sims on his back in 30 sec or less. sims=not a nfl player.
as long as boone doesn't show up at practice drunk, he's got the job.

Everyone here is completely ignoring the possibility that Joe Staley could go down. We have no depth. Snyder just gets toasted when he attempted to play left OT. WE don't just need a right OT. We need someone who could be servicable at both left and right OT.

Injury risk that will not come at a discount. You'll have to pay a high price for his services and on this team he wont start.........have we not gotten tired of overpriced Tackles who cant stay on the field?

I would say if we can get him for a cheap price with incentives then we should totally go after him. He is young and had tons of talent. If he pans out he could be a staple on our line after Marvel decides to retire, he is getting up there in miles so he is not our answer at the T position for years but Levi could be.
If we sign him and he fail, no worries, just as long as we get him for cheap.
