He retired with the NFL record for best passer rating of all time, I think he chose a good time to retire.

Do you think he could have hung around like Favre(not that I would have wanted him to,well yes I would of)I just miss having a top QB. Garcia did do one hell of a job though.

I have a feeling that it would have been his last year anyways. He was 37 years old after all.

Young had no choice, he had to retire. Lee Steinberg and the team / personal doctors were all in agreement that Steve had played his last game when Williams gave him his final concussion.

as a kid, i was heartbroken when young was knocked out by "anus" williams. i was seven or eight at the time and spent hours reading things on steve young and all the history of the 49ers. it was when i truly became a fan. so for young to go out right when i got into it was challenging. who knew we would never advance past the divisional round since then. i've had a sad sad tenure as a fan of the 49ers.
But I will never stop rooting for these guys.

considering that he passed for over 4,000 yards and 36 touchdowns the season before his career-ending concussion, I'm convinced that he had at least 3 good years left.

But, as a 9er fan you got to witness one of the biggest comebacks in playoff history.
They had the 02' playoff game on NFL network last week, I had to watch it just for the laughs. The Giants were so arrogant coming out after half time.

Oh yea, that game is by far my favorite memory in my 12 years as a fan of the 49ers. If I didn't have that I don't know what I would do haha.

I loved that 02 game cause my brother are a huge giants fan and he was popping trash during half time.He said it's over T.O. who Jeff Garcia who and it was the best playoff game he had seen in his life,i told him it ain't over till the 4th qtr,as the niners cut the lead in half he stopped poping junk.

If Steve Young hadn't won a SB, he might still be playing today to get out of Joe's shadow.

No anger for Lawrence Phillips?
Yeah, I don't get it.
It's not Williams fault he had a clear line right to Steve Young and planted him with a solid hit.
Phillips completely whiffed on his blocking assignment. It's Phillips' fault that that was the last play of Steve Young's career.

Young was not forced into retirement, he was convinced. All of the talk that he had no choice is BS because he was cleared by doctors but Walsh convinced him to hang them up. The team was going to lose lots of talent and not be competitive and thus Steve chose not to force the issue. He could've gone 2-3 more years most likely.

He could have played a couple more years, but with such risk, he did the right thing to retire. SF often did a miserable job of protecting Young, and it was probably because they just figured, "oh well, he can scramble out of trouble." I used to get furious when watching defenders in his grill as he dropped back. Steve would always deliver the ball and stoically take the hits. This thread is not a happy trip down memory lane... :uhno:

Steve can throw though. Steve also shows intelligence.
Tebow is a product of the system and will never be an nfl quarterback. he is REALLY stupid.

99 49ers record with Young starting: 2-1 *
99 49ers record with Young out: 2-11
I imagine our 4-12 would have been 9-7 or 10-6 + playoffs.
Pittsburgh, Green Bay, and New Orleans would have been wins (we scored a total of 15 points), and the second game with St. Louis might have (lost 23-7). Also, the overtime loss against the Redskins, when Garcia threw for a grand 168 yards. Plus a couple of others.
But they would have been close. Our corners were the worst of all time that season, it seemed. But Young would have given us a chance to outscore those teams. Garcia's amazing 11 touchdowns that season just seem kind hollow compared to Young's 36 the previous season.
* I'm not sure I should count Jax blow out, because Young played THAT game with a concussion most of the game as well...
considering that he passed for over 4,000 yards and 36 touchdowns the season before his career-ending concussion, I'm convinced that he had at least 3 good years left.
Yes. And the 2001/2002 teams would have been better with him at QB. Sorry Garcia, it's just the way it is.

I'd like to say a couple years, however if the last concussion didn't happen then it was only a matter of time! Man I miss that guy!!

:clapping:
Bout time somebody said it. Walsh was just getting ready to prep "his" project that nobody wanted, Garcia. I loved the man to death, he was one of the greatest things that ever happened to the sport, but he was the most arrogant human beings in the sport as well.
With all of the cap troubles the 9ers were going through, I doubt Young would have been very successful in the first place. He's lucky he got out when he did.

The Harvard product Ryan Fitzpatrick actually ended up starting games as a QB. Tebow will never start.

I doubt that. Some team will draft him and start him one day as a QB. Will he be successful? I have no clue. But if QB doesnt work out I think you can move Tebow to FB or TE.

I was at that game.
It was a clean hit by Williams. It was just time for Young to leave. Too many concussions leading up to that hit.
