The Florida Gators enter this season as the prohibited favorites to win the National championship. I, personally, can't stand this team. I mean, seriously, aside from Michigan and maybe LSU, there is no team in division 1A I have less use for...
So, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss possible weaknesses or flaws I potentially see in their game, since many are saying they'll go undefeated.
For starters, SEC defenses are solid. They should probably know by now, Florida is most dangerous on the ground. Most would agree, Tebow has to prove he can beat you with his arm. Game-plan around that.
Just like in the NFL, repeats aren't easy. Everybody will be gunning for them, and odds aren't spectacular. This team won't sneak up on anyone.
Other SEC teams are improving. Alabama had another outstanding recruiting class, and their most significant question is QB. LSU finished their season strong and have the most stability at qb in quite a while.
Tennessee made a lot of noise this offseason, and they have to be much improved from last year.
The one wild card in this whole equation is the only team to beat Florida last year, Ole Miss. Jevan Snead played phenomenal down the stretch, last year, and might be just scratching his surface. The Rebels lost all their games by very narrow margins, including the Alabama game, which they should have won so many times... Although Ole Miss won't play Florida in the regular season, I can easily see them meeting in the SEC championship game.
Many Players on Florida's team figure to be heading to the NFL next year. With that assumption, players have to avoid what I call, "Marcus McCauley syndrome" or M.M.S. for short. M.M.S. is a condition which affects returning seniors causing their level of play to regress huge, likely a result of playing soft in fear of getting hurt before you get drafted.
With a projected 19-20 starters returning, the hunger to be great may not be there. You see it all the time in the NFL. Once a team has captured that glory, finding the motivation to keep training and playing that hard, can be difficult.
Other teams around the country have made improvements, too. Some will say the Gators got an easy ride against Oklahoma last year, and a match against Texas or USC would have been a better game. That's speculation, more than anything. But, if nothing else, Names like Bradford and McCoy are back, and they would love a crack at Florida.
Well, there are other factors, but I'm just going to lay it on the line right here, right now; Not only does Florida not go undefeated, they don't win the National Championship. And, I'll take it one step further, they don't even play in the big game.
