We have prob discussed this many times before but can anyone help me out here?
What is the diff between a 3-4 DE rushing and a OLB? What pos is generally more effective?
Hypothetically, in terms of the pass rush, would we rather have found a (just as capable as Manny) 3-4 DE?
My main concern is that an OLB will not be strictly a pass rusher and that may be an issue for Manny when he has to cover.

DEs in a 34 are there mainly to eat up blockers and to allow the LBs to do their thing. Normally, your DEs in a 34 are 270-290 pounds and your NT has to be a guy who demands a double team on every play or unless your going to get run all over.
For Manny, dont worry for several reason. One, he played some LB in college so he has experience playing in space and secondly, hes going to be used mainly as an edge rusher and Brandon Moore will be dropping back into coverage more often.
Its like with the Steelers, Porter will come on blitzes most of the time and Haggans will drop back. Same thing happened in NE, McGinest would pass rush on most places and Vrabel would drop back into coverage.
This isnt to say Moore wont be blitzing cause in a 34 youre always sending different people but Manny wont be playing in space too frequently.

so would you guys say 75% of the time Manny is on the field he is blitzing?

so i get the feeling that parys will do most of the rushing with Lawson learning zone more often but having both OLB's rush mixed with the 3 down linemen (5 rushers for those that don't want to add) wouldn't be something too far fetched.
I love when the Steelers send both OLB's, Porter and Haggans reach the QB at the same time and BAM! I'd love to see that with Lawson and Haralson.

Yes the possibilities at LB this year are tremendous :banana5: Can't wait to see how things shape up. Gotta say sure seems like Haralson was a great pick up in the 5th. Seems like we got good value there.

used to see that in baltimore.
now that the players at OLB seem more adept to pass rushing
and you've gotten someone like Brandon moore who can fill in at both OLB and ILB i'd expect to see more blitzes and the LB's (both ILBs and OLBs) utilized more. Pretty much what we all expected last year in terms of blitz packages, i'd fully expect to be used more so this year as long as the offense doesn't practice 3 and out the defense will be fresh enough to blitz on almost all passing downs....
That's the key, and with Vernon helping on 3rd and 1's and hopefully Erick Johnson also healthy and stays healthy, Alex and Gore can keep that defense rested.

I also expect to see Lawson with he hand down on the line coming off the edge. That would totally throw the OFF off.The one thing I want/can't wait to see is Fields, Sopo and Adams on the line at the same time. That would prob make our pass rush more dominant in some situations.Three 300lbs players that can move the pile, with Manny, Parys, D. Smith and Moore trying to destroy the QB.

that is why, the BEST DEFENSE is a GOOD OFFENSE! :boxing: :towel:
Indeed! And I hope we have one hell of a dominating offense to help us out. But unless and until we got a decent pass rush - we'll be a mid level team forever.
I think Walsh's true genius was getting these awesome pass rushing DE's with it seems absolutely no effort at all.

The ROLB (weak side) will primarily rush the passer and occasionally drop into zone coverage...the LOLB (strong side) will have more man coverage duty (on TE) and only rush the passer on blitzing downs. Lawson is perfect fit for the ROLB position and will be a huge improvement over carter from last year (carter is a true DE in the 4-3 mold). I imagine Haralson will only come in at LOLB on 3rd and long type situations (passing downs) or to give lawson a breather.

We were in transition to the 3-4 from the 4-3 for two years. The last year of Erickson/Donahue and the first year of Nolan. Looks like we have finally fully transitioned and will be fully capable of fielding a full array 3-4 defenses this year. We have depth and we have experience - good stuff.
With depth all along the defensive line and Linebacking corps, I doubt if we will run any base 4-3's this year. And I think we'll be all the better for it.

Why are you digging up threads that have been dead for nearly two years?
