any of you salary-cap types out there know if we can trade for one of these guys?

jonathan stewart
steven jackson
lendale white

it looks like we actually have a chance to be a factor in the playoffs this year--but not without a big, bruising back to guarantee the hard yardage (sorry coffee, you can't break tackles).

two of these backs are under-utilized by their teams, and jackson is valuable trade-bait to help the rams rebuild.

we will have to give up alot to get steven jackson or Jonathan stewart. Dont know about Lendale White. We should just draft one

Gore/Stewart: .051% of happening, Panthers need Stewart to take in some of the reps or fill in in case of injury just like Coffee is doing for Gore. Niners FO won't trade much for him and Panthers will not trade him unless its something like a first, 2nd and fifth.

Gore/Jackson: 0% of happening. Jackson is the only thing keeping the Rams from not being shut out every game for the rest of the season. He is the franchise.

Gore/White: 3.14% of happening. I would love White to be traded because CJ will give me more ff points. They have Javon Ringer so he is the future 2nd back. I expect White or Ringer to be traded/not resigned but that will happen in the next 2 seasons. Also a 3rd round for Coffee to be 3rd string is almost a waste as picking Smith/Woods with the first.

Jonathan Stewart is not that big. 5'10, 235... A bit heavier than the average back but he isn't even close to a guy like Jacobs...

If we picked up a big RB for short yardage situations, who would we drop? Gore, Coffee, and Robinson are all bruising, downhill runners. IMO it wouldn't do much good to add someone with a similar running style but just more size... If you want a change of pace, you should ask for a small, shift back a la MJD, Slaton, Johnson, Bush... Someone slippery and versatile.

I love Gore and I think Coffee could develop into a good RB, but I don't think our RB situation is all that great... Very little variety, and with Gore there is always the injury concern...

What if Brandon Jacobs was our running back?

As i mentioned before there are two in my mind are up and comers that would be a steal. Ian johnson on the vikes ps. and gartrell johnson was on the chargers practice squad but someone else picked him like cotton!

What if Brandon Jacobs was our running back?

What if Peyton Manning was our qb? With Drew Brees being the 2nd string?
What if Andre and Calvin Johnson were our #1-2 Wrs? What if Mario Williams and Jared Allen were our De's? What if we had Champ Bailey, Asomugha and Cromartie as our Cbs? What if Ray Lewis was our TED? What if Tom Brady was our waterboy and Tony Romo being used as the "dummy" for the nutcracker? What if...?

I never understood the Coffee pick up, i was hoping for Greene but he got taken 10 picks earlier.

at 6'0 209, that isnt a big back, and Sing was talking about getting a big back.

Coffee is athletic, not big.

NO WE DON'T

We need another back in the mold of Craig...or even Watters. A guy who can compliment Gore by having the speed to get to the out side and catch passes out of the backfield.

What if Bill Gates suddenly became a 49er fan, bought the team, and during the 2010 capless offseason, signed every major free agent out there. :spin:

Did everyone forget that Norris is a pretty effective short-yardage runner?

Nice point. I've been wondering when they'll give him the ball again--or heaven forbid, let him wander out toward the sideline for a checkdown. Worked pretty good for Coach Rathman.

If any team can get Jackson that would be great, but that's why there is free agency. Its hard to find backs like Jackson, and it would cost a team too much to trade for him.

Sing said he wanted a back to compliment Gore and thats exactly what Coffee is. Gore may be small in size but he can pack a punch and Coffee is just another good back that has some good upside. Gore/Coffee will be a good tandem as soon as our OL gets their acts together.

I don't think we need a bigger back I just think our backs need to get stronger. Look at Marion Barber, he only weighs 220 lbs but he's powerful and gets it done at the goaline.

9erzallday
10-06-2009, 09:18 AM
It would be impossible to acquire the backs you listed. However, I do agree that we need a big back. I thought we would have drafted a back that weighed at least 230+ lbs, which is why I was puzzled when they selected Coffee, who is basically the same build as Frank Gore. i know they say he runs like a big back, but up to this point, it's not translating onto the field.

We need a big back that can bruise his way through for an important yard, or can truck over a defender to cross the goalline. WE do NOT have that right now.

Moran Norris? Our big back is our fullback and I like it that way.

WhistlingMtn
10-06-2009, 10:17 AM
They don't need a bigger back. Running backs don't get 1 yard. Lineman and coordinators get 1 yard.

They need a change of pace back that can get to the outside, well they have one, but they wouldn't trust him to be in the game at this point.

Let VD take some carries like last year, 2-3 a game. See if it pans out if you want a big back.
