I'm sure Willis will win it in a landslide because of where we are, but I truly think Sharper deserves it. He has made that defense totally legit, he's putting points on the board and his deflection and interception numbers are out of this world. I haven't seen a defensive back dominate the way he is right now in a long, long time.

I really wanna say Willis, but homerism aside it has to be Sharper. 5 interceptions and 2 defensive TDs in the first 4 games. Thats ridiculous. Plus, I've always liked Darren Sharper.

Sharper is in the lead... easily.
Willis/Dumervil/Allen are all around the same for second place.
Believe it or not, Muchael Huff would be leading the league in turnovers if not for Sharper. He also has many passes defensed... forgot how much. He should get an honorable mention.
And what about Antwan Odom? Doesn't he share the lead in the NFL for total sacks? He was a beast so far.
Patrick Willis is easily the best linebacker so far this year though... and that makes me happy. :) (As long as I count Dumervil as a DE)

Huff definitely deserves a mention but being on a 1-3 doesn't help and the other options have been phenomenal.
I was going to put Odom, but Allen got the nod instead due to his safety and 3 forced fumbles.

his stats are highly skewed against GB. i think thats moreso obvious after last night.
I think at this point theres no way Sharper wins it, but somehow the NFL will let Brady and Favre get Co-Defensive MVPs
Willis look at the difference in tackles made
its a linebacker vs safeties and d-lineman, he should have more tackles. Hes only 7th in the league so its not like hes blowing everyone away with tackles

Dumervil has been flatout lights out, he gets my vote.

This vote is harder than the Offensive MVP with so many defenders players so well. It has to be Darren Sharper right now because he's leading that secondary like no other. Dumervil would be a close 2nd with Willis being 3rd.

Actually another guy that has been just as good as those five is Darrelle Revis. His production doesn't show up on the stat column, but he has been the very definition of "shut down" this year. He did not allow a catch to Colston and shut down Andre Johnson and Randy Moss as well. I wanted to put his name up there, but I knew he would not get a single vote. Plus, David Harris has been the second best LB in the league anyways (non-PR).

I absolutely love Willis in almost every sense of the game, but Sharper is just playing out of his mind so far.

Revis has been a beasts and he's playing like the best CB in the leauge this year. I just don't see a CB getting defensive player of the year because of the reason you mentioned, it doesn't show up on the stat sheet. The USUALLY give it to D-lineman and Linebackers because they're mainly the reason why DB's have great years. Just my opinion though!

I'm really glad Revis is developing into the best CB, because I hyped him up there like was no tomorrow years ago leading into his draft. He's one of the few guys that panned out that I was relentless about. I'm still holding out on Laron Landry and Quentin Groves though. :rake:

I wanted to sign Sharper in the offseason, but everyone said no, he's lost a step. 5 picks, including two TD returns of over 97 yards...yeah, that's not losing a step. He's made a huge difference to that defense.

Willis is the most complete defender. He'll hurt you in every phase of the game.

Sharper right now would win. But I feel that Willis will pull away with it throughout the year.

Sharper has been great, but usually guys will start off with a huge ammount of picks, then it drops off and stays the same.
Willis could have it by the end of the year. If we let him blitz more often (like last week) he can get some sacks. He also has 5 PDef's, which is pretty nice.

I'll have to give the nod to Sharper cuz he has the bigger HL plays...but the better team D wins out @ the end of the yr...
Sharper, Willis, Dumervil, and Allen are the front runners...

i want to say Willis because he is a Niner, but I think Dumervil has been the best so far, with Jared Allen in a very close second.
Elvis has 8 sacks in 4 games...8!! on that average he'd have 32 by season's end; not likely to happen, but wow, what a possibility.
I'd rank Willis at #3 with Darren Sharper and Darelle Revis bringing up the 4 and 5 spots. Revis' stats don't jump out at you, but he has shut down some major receivers so far this year.

I don't even feel I'm being biased when I say Willis. He has made the Niners D successful, and without him, we wouldn't be nearly as good. Then, on top of that, the Niners D is what makes the Niners good in the first place and at the top of their division.
But holy ****, I didn't know some of those stats! Dumervil has 8 sacks!? I didn't even think he'd transition well. And then Sharper has 5 picks?! That's just ridiculous!

Woah, I just forgot Revis. ****, he'd probably be it. He's been why the Jets D has been so successful because they can blitz others. That's my opinion though. He's absolutely dominated in every sense of the word.

Patrick Willis
-37 tackles; 2.5 sacks; 5 PD's; 2 INT's; 1 Defensive Touchdown (#6 overall defense; #2 in points allowed)
All 5 of these guys have great stats but it will be tough for them to keep on this pace. The all time record for ints in a year is 14, Sharper on pace for 20. Dumervil is on pace for 32 sacks, Allen 26. Right now I say Sharper but all 5 of those guys are at a great pace right now but doubt they can keep it up (except willis :))

I'm admittedly probably the biggest Willis homer on the board, so I'm just curious as to why you'd pick Willis (or Dumervil) over Sharper (not dissin your opinion, just curious). I mean, both those guys have been beasting, but Sharper right now is doing the best out of those two with 5 picks and 2 tds.
