View Full Version : Should the NFL allow Bush to wear #5

Rules are rules and I really dont care how special the player thinks they are or how long they have been wearing a certain number. If you wanna play in the NFL you play by the rules and the rules say a running back cant wear #5.
I started this poll because the ESPN.com site has the same poll but the majority is strongly in the favor of allowing him to keep the #5. Fankly I was shocked and wanted to get a more local opinion.

I don't have any highlights of Bush in an NFL uniform on TV so fockin screw him, find a new number rookie......
When he said "Who is Reggie Bush?" I think what he meant was "Who does this guy think he is?"
As a USC fan, I like Reggie but I have a big ol' problem with people who walk in the door asking the league to change their rules to suit them. The NFL has their rules and they have them for a reason. Kindly choose a number within the range for your position and take a seat, rookie. If you really want to wear number 5 that bad, learn how to punt.
Took the words off my "mouth". Thanks chick!

OK, OK, OK. I don't think Bush is expecting anything. But hey don't blame the kid for trying. He's a good guy.

And hey maybe he should go on the roster as a kicker. Is there a rule saying a kicker has to kick the ball.:stirthepot:

Hell no! Even if he was the #1 pick. You're just a rookie in the NFL! You'll be carrying teammates pads after practice and footing bills for lunch & dinner!

True.
One of the few things I like about Bill Parcells is the way he treats every year's 1st pick. Those who have a multi-million dollar contract already signed are bound to have some ego problems... so what does Tuna do? He makes that player his "personal assistant"*.
* = Personal waterboy.
i voted no, if other guys cant then neither can he.

No player is bigger than any team and there is no way any player is bigger than the league.
Sorry Reggie. :nonono:

Reggie Bush is a rookie, therefore has no rights to ask anything of the NFL until he proves himself. Now I got the feelin' he'll be special and all, but until we see what he can do he must follow the rules set forth by the NFL. :club:

Why Should the NFL let Reggie Bush wear his college number,i mean rules are rules. What if the next big name that comes out of college next year and that person gets drafted by a team and he decides he wants to keep his college number so the league should do the same for them to,give me a frekin break so pick a new number Mr Reggie Bush this is the NFL and it stands for Not For Long if you want to gripe about your number, just be quite and play football buddy.

I don't like the whole certain number for certain position thing but I don't think Bush should be given a personal exemption. Change the rule. It would become one of the highest jersey selling years in NFL history. WR's and RB's would fight over the low numbers.
V.D. would really look good in an 18 Niner jersey. I WONT buy a VD jersey now that he's 85. To soon, all the cheapos will still wear Loyd jerseys. Had a Carter so It'll be a 99 now. Big Manny.:ninerh:

Under normal circumstances i would say no, but Reggie Bush has his subway endorsement with the 'get into number five' slogan or whatever and he will probably play a lot of wide reciever and they are using different numbers
if he didn't have his endorcements that kinda depend on it i would say no, but it isn't just him wanting his old number, theres more to it
also it is dumb to get mad at a player because they want a number, its just him asking, he isn't suing them or anything

So, because of a external endorsement, he should be given permission to wear #5?
Right.

If he was the NFL commissioners son and was a quaduple heisman trophy winner, perhaps. But if he sucks in the NFL those endorsements are going to disappear anyway... so he just better pick a number and hope gets through the season and performs well enough to get some endorsements.

Let him wear it, isn't gonna hurt anyone, wouldn't help him, but if he feels like it'll make him a better player then why not..

Because you have rules... and the range of numbers specified by the NFL is technically part of its dress code on the field.

Give the guy a break. He is not demanding it. All he did was ask. He is not being greedy.
And seriously if he was drafted as a 49er (or on your favorite team) you would all be singing a different tune.
Last question, When he does prove himself (and he will) would it then be appropriate for him to ask for his #5.
Once again Reggie Bush is a good guy. He isn't trying to bunk the system.

Why is this a big issue? Just because he's the best prospect in a while? That doesn't change the fact that he is a rookie.
I believe his fans are worrying a lot more than Reggie does. The league has denied the same request from Edgerrin James in the past. Why would they want to be inconsistent by granting RB permission to wear #5?
If the league ever does, they'll set a precedent, and soon all the players will demand to be given the same right to switch jersey numbers.
Just let it go, cuz it won't (and shouldn't) happen.

Yeah, I don't think Bush is making a big deal about this. It's his fans and sports writers looking for a story. He probably just asked and other people ran with it.
BTW, I forgot to answer one of your questions...
No, my take on the topic wouldn't change at all if he was a 49er.

I don't have a problem with bush asking, but they can't make it an exception, they have to change the rule, and until the rule changes, no he shouldn't be allowed to wear it.

find a new number and move on buddy. if the NFL lets him wear 5, there will be all sorts of problems from players who requested to wear their college numbers, and got turned down. players like edge, and roy williams for example.

Why not it's only a number.
The rule was put into place so the refs would have an easier time calling the corect players infraction on a given play (ie 80-89 is a WR or TE). The NFL has declined to change the rule numerous times before. Changing it would only further the thought of most incomming rooks that they own the league and can do what ever they want, as if the whole TO saga hasnt already festered that thought into the Vets. leave it the way it was as you said its only a number get a new one.

Yea, Reggie doesn't deserve any special treatment. If he does it, then others will attempt to do the same. There's a reason different numbers are assigned to different positions.

I say yes. But not just because it's Reggie Bush requesting it. I think single digits should be available to RBs, WRs, DBs and LBs. I also think the teens should be available to all these positions as well, not just WRs, QBs, K and Punters. Pretty much should be like college, except I hate when I see college DL with like 84 or somethin like that.
All the skill positions basically should get to pick any number, but QB must stay from 1-19.
I don't see what the big deal is anyway. I heard they went to this system so that refs would be able to tell if it was an illegal man downfield on pass plays, which is why 50-79 should remain for OL, DL as well I guess.
NinerRider
05-03-2006, 04:29 PM
Another reason to change this rule is as the league gets older more and more teams are retiring jersey numbers, so a team that retires say 3 or 4 WRs numbers would only have like 6-7 traditional #s to chose from, and at the same time they're keeping 5-6 WRs and 3-4 TEs, which is one of the reason's the teens became available for WRs. Just make every number available, aside from OL, DL and QB, and everything would be all good.

I have been thinking about this for a while. My bet is that Bush was asked (or told) by subway to ask to keep his current number.
I say we start blaming Sub-Way and not Reggie.

If Bush wins this petition or whatever, and does get to wear #5, there are going to be SO MANY veterans complaining to the league about it and the first would be Edgerrin James. :whistling:

no college numbers stink
PTI was talking about this right after they were talking about David Stern and the dress code in the nba. interesting event of hypocricy. Winborn (whom i usually like to listen to rant) praised Stern for his "if you don't like the rules get out" mentality. Then turned around and condemned the NFL for having the rules that they do and said what would it hurt if Bush wore #5....my response is, what would it hurt if he didn't wear #5....
Winborn... got milk?

I've never understood why players of any sport get so attached to their jersey number. I understand having a preference, liking one number more than another, but in the end it's not gonna make a player perform any better or worse. Get over the ridiculous superstitions and move on.

I wish the NFL would go with single digits for RBs, DBs and WRs, but since they most likely won't, at least not soon, Reggie should go with # 23 since those two numbers add up to 5.
Maybe the new commish will allow this rule change, who knows?

I really don't like crazy numbers in the NFL. While they may be considered the No Fun League, the NFL regulates and maintains order to a league full of spoiled, self-serving athletes. They shouldn't always get what they want.

Article, here. (http://www.nola.com/sports/t-p/index.ssf?/base/sports-23/1147500018143670.xml)
Bush is so intent on keeping his old number that if the NFL allows him to wear No. 5, he has pledged to donate 25 percent of all his proceeds from jersey sales to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, according to his marketing agent, Mike Ornstein.
If he's not allowed, he won't give jack to the relief fund, then?

I partially like number rules seeing how it makes it easier to tell what position a player plays. At the same time though, I really don't care as I have been staying so close with football I don't need numbers really.
My only problem is if they let Bush do it, everybody should be able to do it from now on.
