49ers Web Zone reports that we have signed Jeromey Clary OT Kansas State. 6' 6" 309. The Niners had this guy targeted for some time. He was projected to go as a 5th round pick but ended up being undrafted. Nasty attitude and Academic All-American. A Nolan Guy.
Go Niners!!:clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Amen to that! I wouldn't mind having a line similar to the Cowgirls of the mid-90's.

I had read about this guy last month before the draft, and I was surprised to find out that he hadn't been nabbed at all let alone not drafted by the Niners. It's a great post-draft addition of a college player.

As we can see, we are now departing the West Coast Offense mentality of an agile and moving Offensive Line and now much in favor of the MARIUCCIAN style of WCO.
This isn't necessarily bad but now going in full circle of realizations...
We shall see some MAULING OFFENSES as oppose to the CHESSIC WCO.
Either way, we shall see some improvements while not totally abandoning the WCO with a hybridized TURNER-CORYELL-WCO offense. :yahoo:

Ummm...why would we have signed a guy drafted by San Diego in the 6th round (#187 overall)? :spy: :cop:
I think someone belongs with these guys...:stooges:
I only remembered his name because there is an incredibly camp comic in the UK called Julian Clary and I thought it was funny that a big nasty lineman would share the name.

I think a lot of that has to do with the Salary Cap. The Classic WCO didn't have to deal with the Salary Cap and so you could keep the chemistry of a team together for some time.
Because of the constant changes in personnel - it seems that the offenses of today are becomming more simple and less timing and chemistry centered. It takes many years for a relationship between say a Dwight Clark and Joe Montana come to being, and with the Salary Cap, it's pretty difficult to keep a players relationship intact year after year.
So the consequence is that playoff offenses are becomming more run dominated and less pass dominated than before. Heavy on the defense and plenty of the ball control ground game - and I truly think you can blame the Salary Cap for that.

why would we have signed a guy drafted by San Diego in the 6th round (#187 overall)?
I don't think the 49ers signed him as an UDFA.
Here is what I found about Clary on the San Diego Website:
"When the second day of the NFL Draft’s sixth round rolled around Sunday, the Chargers studied the remaining players available and decided to draft for depth in the offensive line and length on the kickoff team.
Kansas State offensive tackle Jeromey Clary, the 187th pick overall, was taken as a 6-foot-6, 304-pounder to develop at right tackle.
Clary was a three-year starter at Kansas State who started at right tackle his sophomore and junior seasons before he was moved to left tackle his senior year.
“He’s a very competitive guy with good size and toughness,” Smith said. “We wanted to add depth – that’s the key word. We’re going to give him an opportunity to compete at right tackle with an eye to the future. We’ll see how he develops.”
Clary said he prefers right tackle, although he considers himself athletic enough to play left tackle if necessary.
“I felt I found my groove in playing right tackle for two years and that’s why I was drafted,” Clary said. “I’m a blue-collar guy. I’m a solid player whose work ethic is going to carry me further. I’m looking forward to coming out there, working my tail off and being part of the team.”
Clary considers the draft somewhat of a homecoming. Kansas State played in the 2002 Holiday Bowl in Clary’s freshman season when he played a backup role. He’ll also be reunited with Darren Sproles, the Chargers’ fourth-round draft pick in 2005 as a return man and backup running back out of Kansas State.
“I fell in love with San Diego during the Holiday Bowl,” Clary said. “I can’t wait to get out there. I’m looking forward to being with Darren Sproles again, too. He’s an amazing player and a great guy to block for.”

I just got blindsided with your CAPANOMICS! You are right....
We are slowing down a bit on that....
And I wish we could reverse that. I just see the boring 'ol 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense comming back to the 49ers. That's the last thing I want to see. I loved the classic offense of Joe to Jerry, Joe to Dwight, Steve to Rice etc....
But I just don't see the trend reversing any time soon, so long as the cap is in place.

Wait, so Alex is going to be a primary pocket passer now?
I want us to utilize his running ability so we can add confusion to the defense.

Clary was drafted by the Chargers:
Kansas State offensive tackle Jeromey Clary had no idea the San Diego Chargers had interest in him. Eventually, they proved it.
Clary was a sixth-round selection by the Chargers as the 187th overall pick Sunday in the NFL draft.

KTKA-49 reports the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with undrafted rookie free agent OL Jeromey Clary (Kansas State). Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
SO they got two teams confused, and have a drafted player supposedly signing as an undrafted free agent? Sheesh

The 49erswebzone is wrong, because Clary was drafted by San Diego.
However, I just found this note on 49erwebzone about Clary: "here's the scoop, SD did draft him, but due to an undisclosed injury, they wont sign him anymore. the niners swooped in and got him instead. no news on what the injury was. also later today they should announce the signing of the OL from Hawaii that they were competing with the Patriots for."
By the way, the OL from Hawaii referred to above is Brandon Eaton, who is 6-2 and 312. He played center and guard.

Clary is a great pickup and he has a good head on his shoulders. Where he will line up for us remains to be seen. I've never been a fan of taller OGs simply because they pose several problems with QB vision, leverage against shorter DTS, and longer legs tend to mean more lower leg problems in the trenches.
But you cannot deny the kids ability. He comes from a bigger school that plays against good competition and he's a bit of a bookworm. He comes with a solid 5th round grade but possibly was passed over due to his height and scouts' doubt as to whether he can convert to OT. If Newberry cannot play, Clary could be a dark horse to win a 4th OG spot on the roster with Heitmann moving to C to clear room.

Actually Eaton is participating in the Redskins 4 day rookie camp starting tomorrow. According to the Honolulu Advertiser Eaton has already decided on the Redskins and is hoping to be invited to their mini-camp.
