Any news on Rasheed Marshall in camp? He has good size/speed and alot of potential, but he struggled as a rookie in a new posistion. Is he progressing? I was excited/dissapointed at the same time when we drafted him with the first pick in the 4th round, because he is either a hit or miss draft pick. Did we hit or miss with him? Will he even make the squad?

I don’t think we cut guys like him loose after a rookie season. A year from now we will be reading the same BS about the position switching rookies we drafted this year and in a few years, people will wonder where in the heck all these good players on the 49ers team came from.
Does this mean I think Rasheed Marshall will have what it takes to make the transition? No. But T.O. didn’t take the NFL by storm in his rookie season either and he wasn’t even switching positions when he came to the NFL. You really have to give every rookie some time to adapt to the change of pace in the NFL. When you ask them to switch positions, you need to give them a little more time to develop. |

I would expect him to get cut. One of the major reasons for drafting him was for punt and kick return duties, which he did poorly last year in his limited opportunities.
The fact that we drafted Brandon Williams in the 3rd round to do the same thing tells me Marshall is likely gone unless he improves dramatically from last year. Oh well, not every second day draft pick will work out. If you get a couple solid contributers on the second day of the draft, you did well. |

When you draft a "project" player, you have to expect them to struggle in the beginning. I'm sure Nolan knows that. However, he also knows how to take a good look at a prospect and determine whether or not he has what it takes to play in the pros. I'm always rooting for the project players because I hope we will get a "steal" that way. I'm still hoping.
